Please have a seat, and let me get you a cup of coffee! Or perhaps you prefer tea? How are you? I am enjoying the second week of my vacation (out of three weeks). It’s been a good week so far, just like last week, just slightly different. Different how you may ask? Well, the whole week up until today have been extremely hot and humid. There’s been an unusual heat wave and I am most grateful for the first cooler day in a while.

I’ve been riding my bike to the garden around 4am Tuesday-Friday to water, and do the most necessary work. My allotment garden is 4.1 miles/6.6km away, mostly uphill on the way there. It was so nice to experience a slightly cooler air around 4am.

Many of my flowers passed their prime, but still look beautiful (to me). Most of my berry bushes are ready (or almost ready) for picking. I will be busy picking berries and weeding this coming week. I did pick some red currants this week, starting to fill up my freezer. I don’t necessarily need more red currants myself, I will focus on black currants and raspberries. Raspberries is my daughter’s favourite. It is her birthday this coming week and she always wants me to make a raspberry cake. Luckily it looks like I am going to be able to do that this year as well :)

Gooseberries ready for picking.

I also harvested my garlic this week, I harvested broccoli, and enjoyed my first squash. It is late summer and harvest time is on. These coming weeks will be busy, the busiest of the year.

During this hot week I rode my bike around 28 miles/45km, most of that early in the mornings. I also read around one book a day! I am a fast reader, and what could be more relaxing and enjoyable to do during insanely hot days? Are you reading something interesting right now?

Thank you Natalie for hosting the weekend coffee share! This week Natalie shared (among other things) an artist, Stanzie Tooth, that was new to me. What is happening in your part of the world? What’s the weather like?

Maria

  1. I admire your ability to rise early and get out to the garden. Bringing in harvests is so rewarding, nothing like opening up a bit of ‘summer’ in the middle of winter. :)
I harvested my first zucchini this week. The cukes are slow in coming, alas. I planted some new lettuce starts yesterday I got at the farm stand. It’s like getting 6 heads for the price of one. :)

    1. Mornings are wonderful, especially when the days are hot. Yesterday and today it is so much cooler 53.6F right now, it is still early and it will be slightly warmer later, a high of around 62F. Very comfortable. We had so much rain yesterday that I skipped going to the garden all together. Today I am going there to do some weeding, I am way behind with weeding, due to the high temps. I also started some winter crops, and I will start some more.

  2. The gooseberries are interesting. They kind of glow in the photograph.

The weather where I am has ranged from air quality issues (wildfire smoke), to heat warnings and today, thunderstorms.

    Happy Saturday, Maria.

    1. I agree on the gooseberries! My son used to love gooseberries and that is actually why I planted the bushes in the first place. This summer I’ve came to realize that many of the things I have in my garden I planted because my son appreciated them so much when he was younger..

The weather is crazy. Right now I have no complains about our weather, we-re going to heave a high in the low 60’s today and our air quality is good. A nice change. Happy Sunday!

  3. Happy birthday to your young one! My gooseberries struggle and I haven’t figured out why yet, but we have had an abundance of raspberries and black currants! I am very lucky and grateful that I don’t have to cycle to the garden!

    1. Thank you so much!

Raspberries and black currants are wonderful. The variety of gooseberry that thrives the most in our area is “Hinnomäki”.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

  4. 4AM? Do you ever sleep, Maria? Kidding! ❤️ I envy your ability to rise and get things done so early. Yay for cooler temps! The Gooseberries are kind of odd looking, like a transparent sack. I looove broccoli! Happy weekend, Maria. ❤️😊

    1. I sometimes sleep ;) My goal is always 8 hours/night, but sometimes if I don’t get that I take a nap in the afternoon, if I don’t work. These hot days taking a siesta during the hottest hours have been perfect.

      Happy Sunday!

  5. I love gooseberries but they seem hard to get in New Zealand, but then they aren’t a native species anyway. Lovely to see your produce!

    1. Thank you! I wish I could send you some, or perhaps a bush for your garden? They thrive in containers as well.
