Welcome to the Weekend Coffee Share! How are you? Can I get you a cup? Today there’s coffee, tea, and hot chocolate to choose from. What would you like?

Main square, Falun, around 3.30pm yesterday.

It has been an unusually warm and dark week, without snow = many cups of coffee! All the Christmas lights does make a difference though. Despite the darkness it’s been a good week so far, and I am sure it will continue being a good weekend since we have making gingerbread houses (plural) on our to-do list. Fun, fun, fun!

Tuesday happened to be my birthday. It was a good day, I worked as usual, had a Swedish fika with friends, and baked pizza with my daughter in the evening.

On Wednesday I participated in a workshop about promoting early reading skills in the morning. For a few years I’ve been participating in a regional project that promotes reading and the importance of helping young children to develop their own reading skills. I love everything about reading, promoting books and reading is something I do with great passion every day! I learned to read when I was 5 years old, my daughter learned to read when she was 3 years old. On an ordinary day I get up between 4.30-5am and dive in to the world of books and read 1-1,5 hours before I get ready for work. Sometimes I read work/school related books and sometimes I read for my own pleasure. Holding the book in my left hand and a cup of strong, black coffee in my right hand. (It’s kind of funny because if I don’t read I usually hold my coffee with my left hand.) My favourite time of the day.

Wednesday was a was a short work-day, I attended the work-shop, had lunch with the children at work, and prepared some practical things that had to be taken cared of since I was going to be absent on Thursday and Friday. Afterwards I took a long walk to the bike shop, picking up my bike. It’s been serviced and equipped with new winter tires. I am so ready for winter! I mean real winter with snow!

Thursday and Friday I had school. The theme for Thursday was Inclusion of newly arrived migrant students in Swedish primary schools. On Friday we learned more about the Swedish market school system. Things are going well in school, and I learn a lot about different underlaying processes that I have great use for at work. For example this week I learned about how social interaction between students can be promoted in such ways that it is helping students with special needs to develop their language skills.

There’s been time for a few bike rides and several longer walks this week as well. All things consider, a very good week. How is your week? Thank you Natalie for hosting the Weekend Coffee Share!

  1. I wish there was a way to teach reading for fun. I love reading, and it is sad to me that my boys don’t. I’ve tried things like letting them pick the books they want, recommending books based on their interest, reading with them, reading the same book as them . . . They just don’t think it’s fun (heavy sigh). For now, I will continue modeling my happy reading and building my little library. Maybe one day they will change their minds.

    Great coffee share, Maria.

    1. I am sure that you are an excellent role model when it comes to reading (and writing! I am sure the two are connected in some ways). They might very well change their mind at some point.

    1. Thank you so much! I believe that is one of the best gift we can give our children. (Even when it sometimes seem like they don’t appreciate it at the moment.) Thank you for having coffee with me today!

  5. I thought our days are short, but yours really are so much shorter! The counter to those long summer days, I guess. :)
Happy belated birthday, Maria. Your winterized bike is a good way to celebrate it. :) Do your tires have little studs in them for traction?
We got a little 5′ tree to decorate from a local farmer today (grown about 1000′ from our house). It is very cute and didn’t take long to set up with lights and garland. Tomorrow I’ll put a few of my favorite ornaments on it. I have far too many to get them all on, I had too many even for an 8′ tree!
Do Swedes send Christmas cards? My list grows shorter by the year, but I still like to send them. Younger people don’t seem interested in them and families tend to send a photo card of their gang. Traditions change! 🌲 Have a great week!

    1. I guess our short winter days are meant to make up for the ling summer days, like you said :) I do sleep much less during the summer and rest more during the winter. I don’t necessarily sleep more during the winter, but I do slow down. Winter is much lighter and brighter with snow, it is rarely this dark.

Have fun decorating the tree! We ended up decorating the tree on my birthday. We have a plastic tree that we had for five years and an ex-colleauge had for four years before us, so it is really old, but works well. I gave it a good shower when I brought it down from the attic last weekend.

It is not very common to send Christmas card. I only know a couple people who sends them, (not including relatives in the US.)

Yes, the new winter tires on my bike have little studs all around them. I have rather thick tires and now with this extra traction I would feel safe using my bike in almost any road condition.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

  7. Where is the snow? I hope it starts snowing there soon so it lightens up too. I can see the difference in the photos of no snow versus snowy!

Happy belated birthday, I too love to read. I’m thankful my daughter loves to read too, probably more than me! I wish my son’s read more… I love your passion for reading and how you help young children with all that you do. I hope you have a wonderful week! ❤️

  9. Happy Belated Birthday! It’s been a very strange winter so far here, too. Last week felt like winter with the high temperatures barely hitting 40-degree-F and this upcoming week, the high temperature is supposed to be in the 50’s with no snow. That’s not winter, it’s spring! I hope the weather normalize in your part of the world soon.

  10. I’m so happy my daughter is an early reader too — it’s a single parent win for me!

Happy birthday! It sounds like you had a nice get-together! Oh wow about starting your day reading so much. I think I am the opposite. I read right before going to bed around 10pm-11pm…

    1. Thank you so much! It doesn’t matter when you read, it matters that you read :) What is your favourite genre?
