Welcome to the weekend coffee share! Can I get you a cup of coffee? Or tea? A hot drink is in place since the weather is freezing outside. It is cold and beautiful, just like I love it!

The beginning of the week was work as usual, all good in that department. Early Thursday morning I took the train to Stockholm for a couple days at the University of Stockholm (I am a post graduate student there.) It takes about three hours to go there by train. (On the way home it only took 2 hours 40 min). I love traveling by train for so many reasons, sustainability is one of the main reasons. This time the train was on time and the journey was incredible in every way.

This (above) is a photo from the inside of the grand central station in Stockholm.

These are photos of the outside (above and below).

The stop before the grand central station is Arlanda airport, and it is easy to take the train directly to your plane if you are traveling longer distances. The grand central station is connected to the subway, the bus station, and the commuter trains to the suburbs. There are many shops, restaurants and cafés inside of this station, one can spend many hours here without a problem, it has most things you could possibly need.

When I am traveling I love taking walks to enjoy the new surroundings. In Stockholm I love looking at old houses. Interesting architecture fascinates me.

Where I live, in Dalarna, many houses are typical little red Swedish houses, and it is more country all around, which I love. However that makes it interesting to see something else from time to time.

I took many walks while in Stockholm, but daylight is scarce this time of the year, and I spent the middle of the day at the University. I’d love to go there soon again with more free time to explore during the day.

I don’t know if I could live in Stockholm, but if I did I would deal with it like I did when I lived in Las Vegas, make sure to get out in nature as often as possible. Stockholm is surrounded by amazing nature, even though I did not have the time to enjoy it this time. It is easy to take a boat out to one of the many islands.

I stayed at a decent hotel in the middle of the city. It was convenient since my schedule was busy.

Have you been to Stockholm? Or would you like to visit? What are some of the things that you like to do when visiting a new city? Studying interesting architecture and good food is high on my list. I did visit a couple different buffés this time. I do like buffés very much!

Thank you Natalie for hosting the weekend coffee share. Please tell me about your week! What are you most grateful for so far? Any fun weekend plans?

Maria

I too like a train into the “city”, mostly to dodge the Long Island traffic and NYC’s gridlock. It looks like Stockholm is decked out for the holidays. I am surprised to see a big sign in English! Thanks for the tour.

    1. That sounds like a wise way to go about it, to avoid traffic jams.

English is all around in Sweden, spoken and written. All Swedes speak english, you start having english as a subject in school at age 7-9 years old, depending on the school. Many of our newer residents from other countries also speak english, so it is one of our everyday languages.

  2. Busy week! Stockholm looks like a bustling place, esp. around Grand Central. As you may remember, I loved to travel in my younger days, though the closest I got to Sweden was UK and Germany. I now find cities, traffic and crowds just too energy-draining. I like the comforts of home, and I’m fortunate to live in a place that feeds my body and soul. 🙏🏼 Have a great week!

    1. I feel you. All the people feel pretty draining. I took the photos during the quieter hours of the day…If given the choice of city living and a cabin in the woods/mountains, the choice would be easy.

  4. I *love train travel! It is among my favorite experiences ever! And while visiting big cities isn’t my favorite thing to do, when I do, it is the architecture and food options I am typically the most excited about, too :-) I’m so glad you enjoyed your time in Stockholm! Hope you have a lovely weekend, Maria!

  6. We’ll get to Stockholm one day – it looks a walkable city for a visitor, and we’d check out the islands after we’re through with restaurants and coffee shops! (I’ve never visited Sweden, but Mrs. PC has, when teaching her community nursing students – she visited Jonkoping and around as part of a study trip, and loved it!)

  8. I’ve been to Stockholm and would love to revisit. When visiting a new city, I like to take the direct train/ subway/ tram or bus into the city centre if there’s one, and spend time walking to explore. I also like to try local cuisine. Thank you for your weekend coffee share. Have a wonderful weekend!

  10. What a beautiful post and a beautiful city. I’ve enjoyed train rides, I’ve been on a few and I know we’ve chatted before about both of us taking the train to the Grand Canyon from Williams AZ at different times of course. Haha, sounds like we went together the way I wrote that. 🤗 One day I hope to get over there to visit and when I do you will be the first place. 🤩 I’ve been so busy and stuck in a rut with writing. I am also needing to figure out a new writing schedule. Lots of changes in my daily life, all good things, but changes that affect my free time and writing time. I do miss sharing so I hope I can get back into the swing of things. 😍

I always find your blog posts so inspiring. I am hoping to be back blogging soon! Take care my friend! 💞

    1. It is so wonderful to see you here and I too hope you get back to writing soon, both for selfish reasons and because I think it makes you happy :) As we are getting closer to Christmas I think it would be lovely to see some of your crafting projects :) I hope the changes in your life are for the better. See you soon my friend.

  11. What an interesting tour around Stockholm. I’ve never been but my husband used to travel there regualary on business. I confess I am not a city person so it is unlikely I will visit.

I am also not a train person. Travelling on the Metro in Lyon (France) used to terrify me. It was always so frantic with so many people pushing and shoving to get on the trains I was always scared I would get separated from my husband and I would get left on the train LoL

    Have a good week :)

    1. I have to confess that I am not a city person either, but enjoy a short visit every now and then. I do not like metros and subways at all, they are very stressful. When I am speaking of trains I think of the pleasure of quietly enjoying the view of the Swedish countryside from a comfortable train seat, munching on something good, having a conversation with interesting people, or simply enjoying a book/music – relaxing time to myself. It is interesting how a simple word can give us such different thoughts and memories :)

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful week :)

  12. I’ve never been to Stockholm but I’ve certainly been to Las Vegas. I imagine Las Vegas is smaller in area and less dense population-wise than Stockholm. Of course, it’s very hot in Vegas — it’s in the middle of the desert with Red Rock Canyon right outside.
