Welcome to the weekend coffee share on this very special Saturday, June 6th, The National Day of Sweden. It’s the day when Sweden became an independent country back in 1523, when Gustav Vasa was elected to be the king of Sweden. June 6th is also the day when Sweden adopted a new constitution in 1809, reducing the kings power and clarified different roles of authority in the country (the king, court and parliament).

Would you like a cup of coffee? Or tea? While we chat about the week. I baked some ciabatta, and there’s plenty of sides in the shape of different cheeses and vegetables to go with that, if you feel like something to eat.

Our National Day is often spent outside in nature, as are all our holidays from Easter-Halloween. The holidays during the winter on the other hand is usually spent indoors, at someones home. I rode my bike up to my allotment garden early this morning and spent a few lovely hours there.

We’ve finally had some rain this week, and also warmer temps. Things are starting to take off in the garden. I love this time of the year.

My HΓΌgelkultur bed is full of life, a mix of vegetables, annual and perennial flowers.

The Jerusalem artichokes seem to thrive among the Egyptian running onion.

I planted three pumpkins yesterday, two in wholes in the ground (see the photo below) and one in a compost (above). The seedlings Pumpkin Mammoth Gold are of about the same size. The soil in the ground is extremely fertile, and I am assuming that the compost should create a great climate for a plant that require lots of nutrients. It’s going to be interesting to see their development.

Do you have a garden? What grows in your garden right now?

Thank you Natalie for hosting the weekend coffee share , and the lovely walk through Old Toronto! I am happy it’s the weekend, and only Saturday, which give me plenty of time to catch up with all the blogs I’ve missed throughout the busy work-week. There’s also an annual street festival with some well-known artists and different food vendors in town this weekend. I passed through town last night, and earlier today enjoying the “vibe”, we’ll see if I visit any of the concerts. How is your week? Please help yourself to a refill and tell me all about it!

  1. I’m glad you are having a great weekend Maria, and your garden is thriving! There is a small neighborhood near my old home in Michigan that has a sign at the beginning that says Vasa on it. I assume they are all Swedish people living in there. They have their own lake too! God bless Sweden!! πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ

  2. Hi Maria, your garden is looking wonderful. Seeing your garden allow me to see what a little humidity can do. So green. The humidity in my garden is about 20%, which causes a lot of plants to dry out. I just harvested another cucumber this morning. 😊 Have a nice weekend.

    1. Dry areas are very challenging. I’ve been gardening in many different places and Las Vegas was the most difficult of them all.. Have a great rest of your weekend!
