Welcome to the weekend coffee share! Let’s have a warm beverage together and talk about the week. What would you like? Some coffee? Or tea?

The weather is still warm, we’ve had lows of 50F/10C during the night and slightly warmer during the day. It’s been a grey week, with light rain some days. A week from now it is looking like we’re getting more normal temps, with cold nights and hopefully the arrival of the first snow.

For now the bike lanes are in perfect condition. I am thinking of switching to winter tires on my bike in a couple weeks, or so. I’m using my bike more than ever, and enjoying it tremendously. I did not use my bike at all last winter, but halfway through winter I regretted my decision to not switch to winter tires. I am not making the same mistake again.

With colder weather on the way I decided to plant my garlic today. The variety I enjoy the most (in the photo) is called “Otakar” . The cloves often has a red/purple colour. It is an overwintering, hardneck garlic variety. It is my favourite when it comes to taste and it is also very suitable for our growing conditions, it accept ups and downs in the weather, (freezing cold, warm, and cold again and so on.)

Some of the beds before planting.

After planting garlic (and other crops that I plant before winter) I cover the garden bed with leaves as an insulating layer.

I also planted some ishikura onions and beets today. I planted red and yellow onions back in October.

I also prepared two garden beds for planting in the spring. They are ready to go when I decide to start planting. I’ll probably start of with some leafy greens and radishes in those beds as early as april.

Would you like a refill on that drink? How was your week? Tell me all about it!

Maria

  1. I love tours of your garden. I need to cut mine down today and put away the tomato cages.. Wow, winter bike tires! I didn’t know that was a thing. Do they really grip and keep you upright when it’s slippery?

    1. I am so happy to hear that! My garden is my happy place and I love every season there.

Yes winter tires for your bike are made with a softer rubber material more suitable for colder weather. The ones I am getting for my bike has spikes on them. There are a gazillion different varieties. I’ll make a post about it in a few weeks.

  2. Wow, 50F feels a little warm for low temp. The low temperatures here have been flirting with frost in the last few days but I haven’t seen 50°F since probably 2 weeks ago. Always love to see your garden. :)

  3. There is something cozy about a bed of leaves covering a winter crop. Thank you for sharing photos of your garden beds along with plans for the winter. I enjoy seeing the towering trees and the curving paths. I can almost smell the damp air. Mmmmm

I had my left hip replacement surgery on Monday, so it’s been a week of pain and healing, work with a physical therapist, and lots and lots of tea.

    1. Yes, covering a winter crop with leaves its so satisfying. Like a ritual of thankfulness and gratitude for the silent work that is happening under ground during the cold season. Only a fellow gardener could possibly understand the full extent of that.

I wish you a speedy recovery. It sounds like major surgery. One of my former colleagues got a hip replacement last year and for her it worked wonders.

  4. We’ve had similar temps and several windy/rainy days, bringing down most of the leaves. I think the temps will trend downward as next weekend flurries are expected, so we’re heading down the path to winter.
I think snow tires on your bike is a great idea… I assume if it is icy, you’ll take the bus or walk? That reminds me to make sure I have boot spikes at the ready. 🧐
Mostly I do little things puttering in the garden. I dug the last of the carrots today, brought in plant supports, dumped the hanging pots in the compost and trimmed back things that lean into paths to make shoveling snow easier. The most fun was making my annual dried hydrangea, etc. bucket for the front porch. In Dec. I’ll add Xmasy greens, berries and pinecones. Getting ready for the holidays!
    Have a great week.

    1. It is funny how our weather is so similar most of the year :) I am very much looking forward to the first snow and the light that it brings.

I am planning on getting the kind of winter tires that has spikes on them, similar to the crampons I have for my winter shoes. I can walk everywhere I need to go, it takes ten minuters to walk to work, but I like the freedom of riding my bike.

You are so wise when it comes to gardening and making the preparations necessary.

  6. The first snowfall is happening here today. The weather forecast predicts snowfall for the next four days. I’m excited for it. I love the way the snowy ground looks before anything disturbs it.

Good call on the winter bike tires. There must be a safety factor in the winter ones.

Thank you for the virtual coffee.

  7. I never considered you would need winter tires on bikes … but of course you do if you are cycling in the snow and ice. Your horta is looking so organised.

    1. Yes, winter tires makes all the difference. Last year when I decided against getting them (for numerous reasons), I did not ride my bike from Nov-late March.

Thank you kindly! i feel bad for spending less time there than I usually do. It’s been a strange/busy fall. My plan is to do a little more work before the snow. Have a great week!
