Welcome to the weekend coffee share. This week I thought we could have a coffee and a conversation while enjoying one of my favourite ways of transportation, travel by train. In my experience, the best conversations takes place while doing/experiencing something together. One of the things that I really like when traveling by train is to have conversations while enjoying breathtaking views, without having to worry about focusing on the road, like you have to when you drive a car.

Since choosing to not have a car a little more than six years ago, I’ve made up a plan in my head for my transportation needs. If the place I want/need to go to take me less than 15 min of walking, I always walk. If I have more time I walk longer distances as well. If the place I want/need to go to take me somewhere between 15 min and one hour on foot, I choose to ride my bike, or on rare occasions I take the bus. If the place I want/need to go to take me more than one hour on the bus, I take the train.

This week I needed to go back and forth to Stockholm two days. I booked my train tickets a long time ago, to get the best price. The photos in this post is from the first train ride. It is early morning and a fairytale landscape unfolds outside the window, while I am sipping my morning coffee and reading a book.

There was almost no people on that first train, and no-one sitting anywhere near me. If you where there, what would we talk about?

While sitting on the train I remember thinking a lot about the landscape outside the window, seeing first big pine forests, slowly exchanged for farming country, and later smaller towns and as we got closer to Stockholm the cities got bigger and you could see big parking areas, factories, office buildings and the roads and houses grew bigger as we approached Stockholm. It takes three hours by train to get to Stockholm, not very long for a train ride, but still a lot to see on that journey. I like the forest and farming land the most, then there’s some really ugly suburbs, but when entering Stockholm it somehow gets beautiful again. I do love the architecture of the old, but well taken cared of buildings in Stockholm. There’s a lot of history everywhere you look.

I’ve always enjoyed traveling by train, something I’ve been doing my whole life, but naturally there’s also one more and very important reason that I choose to travel by train – it is a more sustainable alternative compared to travel by car, or plane. I also like that you can read a book in quiet one minute, and the next minute find yourself in the middle of a lively conversation with strangers (that by the end of the journey aren’t strangers anymore). I haven’t even mentioned the thrill of going to sleep in one place and wake up somewhere completely different, perhaps even in a different country, when taking a night train.

As I write about all these things that I love, I experienced a major malfunction in the shape of my train getting canceled as recent as yesterday, one of the two days I really needed to go to Stockholm. So I did only go there one day this week. I could have taken a later train, or bus, I was offered that, but if I did I would have missed the reason why I needed to go. Next year is election year in Sweden, and I personally will definitely take in consideration those politicians that are promising to ensure that older parts of the railways are improved..all things considered, I still love taking the train, but I would prefer to not experience canceled trains.

Have you ever taken a longer train ride? Do you like traveling by train? Do you even perhaps have a “dream train ride” on your bucket list? Help yourself to a refill on that coffee and tell me all about it!

  1. I am sure you found that a big downside when you lived in the US. I know people who travel by train on occasion (my brother in Philly goes up and down the east coast via train) and others who book train travel as a special vacation, but it is not common here. Besides commuter rail, urban light rail and subway, I have only travel by train a few times, and those were in Europe.

The scenery out of the window does look wonderful! I’m sorry you missed one of the days in Stockholm.

    Have a wonderful week :)

    1. I did occasionally miss my train rides while in the US, but my animals kept me rather busy :) I have never had as many horses and dogs at the same time as I had in the US, and at the same time being a mom, and trying to understand a new culture pretty much took all my time and energy. I did sense that traveling by train wasn’t as common in the US. None of my friends there ever took the train. I do remember suggesting it a few times to different friends, but no-one was very interested. I bet going up and down the east coast by train has to be very beautiful. Traveling by train is common in Europe, as you noticed yourself :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and new week to come!

  2. I used to commute by train, when I was in the university. I didn’t really like it. It was too crowded. I’ve also ridden on longer distance train and quite enjoyed it. I’m sorry your train got cancelled, I’m sure it would had been quite enjoyable.

    1. I think commute trains are different and less enjoyable. i used the subway a couple times in Stockholm this week and it was crowded and not as nice as taking the long distance train. I hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend!

      1. I’ve experienced trains in Europe when I went to the UK a few years, traveling from London to Scotland and I must say, it’s much more comfortable than riding Amtrak in the US. I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well. :)

  3. I can’t remember the last time I went on a train LoL NEVER in Portugal … maybe 25years ago in Canada. It was wonderful …up into the mountains the scenery was wonderful.

Tell a lie … when our daughter lived in Lyon we used to use the metro … I used to call it the sardine ride.

Using public transport is a more sustainable albeit not a reliable one. We don’t have public transport per se where we are. Sadly ..

    Interesting read, Maria.

    1. I can only imagine how beautiful a train ride in Canada would be! I do know that public transportation doesn’t work so well in many (perhaps most) places. People complain about that here as well and it is true to some degree, it depends on where in Sweden you live. It is often better around the big cities, compared to small towns and the countryside. Thanks for having coffee with me today!

  4. Great post, and wonderful out the window views!
We travelled by train so much when we lived in Europe, relatively quick and inexpensive to travel between countries and more relaxed than driving – for us, France, Germany, Belgium most often. (And the coffee onboard wasn’t always bad!)

  5. Train is also my favorite because you can move around instead of being stuck in a seat. The sound and swaying can be soothing, too. As you know, US train travel is $$ and not that good, so I end up flying to CA to see my son, even though we didn’t go this year. Love train travel in Europe, which is so much better!

    1. Exactly! There’s so much freedom to it, and you can actually get of ahead of your destination if you would like. My plan is to get interrail global passes for Ms. H and I one summer when I think she is ready for it.

      1. That’s how I traveled in my early 20s. Eurail passes were so affordable!

  6. The train sounds so wonderful and the views are amazing!! To be able to relax, read, and enjoy the views is the best way to travel. However, as so many have mentioned it’s not something we do here in the States. Flying is the best mode of transportation for long distance travel, it’s just so much faster. Trains here have lots of stops and it can take a day or more of traveling long distances. I took our kids on an old train to the Grand Canyon which is a special train for vacation excursions from Williams, AZ to the Grand Canyon. It was super FUN! Great memories made with beautiful scenery. I hope you have a wonderful week this week! 💞

    1. Thank you! We’ll go for a train ride when you visit ;)

I too have taken that scenic route from Williams (AZ) to the Grand Canyon, when Ms H was little. We stayed at an RV park in Williams for a few days and took that train, among other touristy things. Great memories!
