I’m so glad you could make time for coffee today! There’s going to be a storm tonight, at least that is what they are saying at the weather channel. We’ll see. We are ready as can be. Let’s enjoy our coffee and conversation about our week.

I saw this cutie on the way home from the garden yesterday. It was very warm and he/she looked confused walking around in circles before finding the way back to the grass and bushes on the side of the road. I stopped the cars for a few minutes to avoid an accident. There is a sign to drive slow due to many hedgehogs in the area, but people don’t pay much attention to that unfortunately. I saw one last week that had been run over by a car. They are adorable but I wished they were further away from danger.

In my 20’s I worked at a bakery in Southern Sweden and next to the bakery lived a very protective mama hedgehog. In the early mornings when I walked to work I kept my eyes wide open to not accidentally get to close to her and her babies. If one got to close by accident she got very aggressive, at least that was what the owner of the bakery told me and everyone else (probably a very smart thing to say anyways.)

I’ve been starting to process all the berries I’ve picked so far. This week I’ve made black currant jam, red currant jam, and a mixed black and red currant jam.

I made some raspberry jam today.

We are enjoying warmer weather than usual for the season and the raspberries keep coming. Raspberry is my daughter’s favourite when it comes to berries, so she is very happy. Yesterday the temperature reached 84F/29C. It is warm today as well, but tomorrow is going to be slightly cooler and I am planning to get a lot done in the garden then, including picking more raspberries.

This past two weeks I’ve also started to pick apples from our apple tree. I have one apple tree, but it is a family tree, with three different varieties propagated into one tree. I am picking the early variety now, then there is a semi-early variety and a late variety. I’ve picked around 30 apples of the early variety. It is the first year we harvest from the tree. I planted it two years ago, but it was around three years old when I planted it. It feels great to be able to harvest our own apples. I also have a plum tree at my 200 SQM allotment garden. I believe it is about a month until the plums are ripe. It is a goal to grow the majority of vegetables, fruit and berries that we eat, we are not there yet but well on our way towards the goal.

How is your week? Thank you Natalie for hosting the weekend coffee share!

Maria

I love your hedgehog. Many years ago when we still had milk delivered in glass bottles I used to find a bottle tipped over and the milk spilt occasionally. It was not until I got up very early one morning that I realised the culprit was a hedgehog.

  4. Sweet hedgehog! Sorry to read that they live so close to a dangerous road. I hate seeing road-killed animals, so sad.
Your garden sounds wonderfully abundant and I’m sure you will reach your goal. I love the idea of a triple-bearing apple tree, a great way to extend the season and good for small plots.
We just finished a 4-day heat wave, so are enjoying low 80s and dry air now. Of course, the garden is booming in the heat, though I have had to water some plants like cukes and melons. It is the first time I’ve grown melons and though lots of blossoms, only two fruits so far. Annual flowers are going gangbusters!
Enjoy your weekend and have a great week ahead!

  6. I don’t think I have seen a hedgehog in real life. It is a cute little creature, but its fur reminds me of porcupine quills.

    Raspberry jam is my favourite.

  8. Maria! Good to read your blog again.. What a darling hedgehog! Your jams look wonderful.. I have a rather young mulberry tree I started in my front yard from a volunteer that sprouted up from my back yard. The berries were small this year but it’s still getting established. I did try to make a blackberry cordial from my blackberry bush and I also started a blue raspberry plant I was gifted from a co-worker.

    Looking forward to catching up!

    1. Hedgehogs are cute. I’ve only seen one a handful of times.

It is a good berry season and a very good mushroom season. I don’t eat mushrooms due to allergies but the forests are overflowing of chanterelles right now.

I hope your weekend is fabulous.

Lucky you with all the berries. I love them with my greek yougort for breakfast but mine are from the supermarket.

    1. Berries and a greek yoghurt is delicious! I love that too. Today I had overnight oats with raspberries for breakfast, that is also very yummy. I made the overnight oats with chia seeds and a vegan oat-milk that I like.

      I hope you’re enjoying a great weekend!
