This is perhaps my favourite berry in the whole world. To me black currants tastes like summer. Right now they are on the brink of being ripe, any day now. I watch them closely and taste a handful every day, to make sure I pick them when they are perfectly ripe. Today it was close, but I’ll have to wait a few more days for perfection. When they are perfect it is a race to see who gets the most berries, me or the birds..To make sure I get some berries I’ve planted an abundance of berry bushes. I have seven black currant bushes. One might say that I could protect the bushes with netting. I could. I’ve done it some years, but now I have more berry bushes than I can count; around 20 raspberry bushes, 7 black currant, 3 red currant, and around 10 gooseberry bushes, that said it would be impossible to know what bushes to protect. I also have one plum tree and one apple tree that one might say that I should put a net over to protect them from birds. I already have netting around the whole garden to protect it from deer, and I’m afraid that adding netting on top of bushes and trees would make it feel like a jail and not my piece of paradise. If you garden, how do you protect your garden from pests?
