I got a pair of good winter tires for my bike as a birthday gift for myself last month. The salesmen and some research on the internet told me that I should get these high quality, studded ones (pictured above). I think it was a reasonable cost considering that I choose to not have a car. Winter tires need to be of very good quality since they are going to endure harsh weather, and these ones should last several winters. Today I finally got a chance to really try my new winter tires in real winter condition. They are fabulous! I didn’t lose grip once going over snow and ice. I felt safe doing 25kmh/15.5mi per hour, and slightly faster downhill. I couldn’t be happier with the tires!

I am also happy with how well my bike worked in these colder conditions. Today was by far the coldest day I’ve ridden this bike, it was -15C/5F. It was a rather short ride, about 4km/2,5mi. I learned that with the wind chill in these temperatures I need warmer gloves if I going to do more bike rides days like today. It was a very beautiful day though! I saw the sun for the first time in weeks.

What are you grateful for today? Would you like to join me in this Daily Gratitude Practice 2026?

    1. Thank you! I think so too! It will make me choose the bike more often this winter. I can walk everywhere I need to go in a normal week, and there is a bus stop a couple houses away, but the bike gives me freedom to get where I want to go, when I want to go there.

    1. I do. I wear glasses all the time, and have one pair especially for biking. They have transition lenses and are wonderful. I use them a lot.

  3. Tempted to do the same, although most places in town are a walk or transit ride away.
    Have fun!

    1. It is Jane! So very beautiful. The bicycle paths are well kept, our town encourage people to choose the bike when possible instead of taking the car.

  6. I’ve seen winter tyres for cars of course but not bikes (and yes I spell the word tyres – the US spelling looks so strange!0.

    1. We never had them when I was a kid. I honestly don’t know when they started to make them.
